SOS - Operations¶
This section provides detailed information about the types of operations that an SOS server offers. Before presenting the operations, it is worth reviewing the terminology used by SOS.
Consider a situation where sensors have been deployed at an industrial estate to monitor carbon monoxide emissions. Each sensor has been placed in a separate building. In this case, each building is a feature-of-interest, each physical sensor represents a procedure and each building’s carbon monoxide emission is an observed property. The act of measuring the carbon monoxide emission at a point in time is an observation.
Feature: Abstraction of real-world phenomena.
Measurement: Set of operations having the object of determining the value of a quantity.
Observed Property: Facet or attribute of an object referenced by a name which is observed by a procedure.
Observation: Act of observing a property.
Observation Offering: An Observation Offering groups collections of observations produced by one procedure, e.g., a sensor system, and lists the basic metadata for the associated observations including the observed properties of the observations.
Procedure: Method, algorithm, instrument, sensor, or system of these which may be used in making an observation.
Sensor: Entity that provides information about an observed property as its output. A sensor uses a combination of physical, chemical or biological means in order to estimate the underlying observed property. At the end of the measuring chain electronic devices produce signals to be processed.
Sensor System: System whose components are sensors. A sensor system as a whole may itself be referred to as a sensor with an own management and sensor output interface. In addition, the components of a sensor system are individually addressable.
The above concepts are applied by SOS through the series of operations listed in the following table.
Operation |
Description |
---|---|
|
Returns service metadata that lists the observation offerings that are available from the SOS service. |
|
Returns a description of the procedures or sensors associated with an SOS. |
|
Returns observation data that has been collected by the procedure or sensor. |
|
Returns a description of the features of interest for which the SOS offers observations. |
|
Allows the client application to retrieve an observation by passing a pointer to that observation. |
|
Registers a new sensor system in the SOS. |
|
Deletes a new sensor system from the SOS. |
|
Allows client applications to insert new observations for a registered sensor system. |
|
Allows client applications to upload a template for result values such that result values that conform to the template can be inserted into the SOS using subsequent calls of the InsertResult operation. |
|
Allows a client application to insert new observations for a sensor system by inserting only the results of the observations and reusing other metadata provided by a template. |
|
Returns a result template that describes the exact structure used by a specific procedure or sensor to generate a new observation result. |
|
Allows retrieving just the result values of observations without the entire metadata of the observation. |
The following are examples of requests that can be sent to operations offered by SOS. The examples can be trialled using tools such as CURL , wget or JMeter.
GetCapabilities¶
This operation returns metadata and other descriptive information about the SOS.
Request¶
Consistent with other OGC web services a GetCapabilities request accepts the service identifier, version number and request identifier as parameters. An example of a GetCapabilities request that is sent through the HTTP Get method is:
http://sensorweb.demo.52north.org/52n-sos-webapp/service?
service=SOS&
version=2.0.0&
request=GetCapabilities
The link to the GetCapabilities request is here
In the example above, the parameters (and values) being passed to the SOS server, SERVICE=SOS
, VERSION=2.0.0
, and REQUEST=GetCapabilities
.
The
SERVICE
parameter tells the server that an SOS request is forthcoming.The
VERSION
parameter tells the server what version of the service is being requested.The
REQUEST
parameter tells the server that the operation requested is the GetCapabilities operation.
The table below summarizes the parameters and values required to perform the request.
Response¶
The response is a Capabilities XML document with a detailed description of the SOS service. It contains three main sections:
ServiceIdentification |
Contains service metadata such as the service name, keywords, and contact information for the organization operating the server. |
---|---|
ServiceProvider |
Identifies the entity, organization or individual that is offering of the service. |
OperationsMetadata |
Lists the available operations, and their endpoints, that can be requested from the service. |
Contents |
Lists the available procedures, sensors and observation offerings that can be requested from the service. |
An example GetCapabilities response from an SOS is shown below, with some sections omitted for brevity.

DescribeSensor¶
This operation returns detailed descriptions of procedures or sensors offered by the service.

An example of a DescribeSensor request that returns descriptions of all procedures and sensors offered by a service when sent through the HTTP Post method is below. In the case of the example, the request is sent to the following URL <http://sensorweb.demo.52north.org/52n-sos-webapp/service>.

InsertResult¶
This operation allows a client application to insert new observations for a sensor system by inserting only the results of the observations and reusing other metadata provided by a template. The request is sent through HTTP POST to the URL <http://sensorweb.demo.52north.org/52n-sos-webapp/service>.
Request¶
An example request for inserting the result of an observation is shown below.
<sos:InsertResult

GetResultTemplate¶
This operation returns a result template that describes the exact structure used by a specific procedure or sensor to generate a new observation result. The request is sent through HTTP POST to the URL <http://sensorweb.demo.52north.org/52n-sos-webapp/service>.

Exceptions¶
When a request from a client to an SOS Server is not performed properly, a server needs to report an exception. Where an exception occurs, the server will return a report containing details of the exception.
The following exception report is an example of what is returned when a request for an offering that is not supported is sent to the server.
<ows:ExceptionReport xmlns:ows="http://www.opengis.net/ows/1.1" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" version="2.0.0" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.opengis.net/ows/1.1 http://schemas.opengis.net/ows/1.1.0/owsAll.xsd">
<ows:Exception exceptionCode="InvalidParameterValue" locator="offering">
<ows:ExceptionText>The value 'http://www.52north.org/test/offering/999' of the parameter 'offering' is invalid</ows:ExceptionText>
</ows:Exception>
</ows:ExceptionReport>
